Integrated Math 1, 2 and 3, Explained for GUHSD Parents

Your student’s schedule says “Integrated Math 2.” Their homework looks nothing like the Algebra 1 → Geometry → Algebra 2 you remember. And when you try to help, you’re told “that’s not how we do it.” Welcome to the most common conversation we have with Grossmont Union parents.

Here’s the whole system, explained the way we wish someone had explained it to every family in the district.

The short version

Integrated Math covers the same California standards as the traditional track — just in a different order. Instead of one subject per year, each course braids algebra, geometry, and statistics together, going deeper each year. Valhalla, Granite Hills, Steele Canyon, Monte Vista, Grossmont, and their sister schools all run this sequence.

What’s actually in each course

Integrated Math 1 (usually 9th grade)

Linear equations and inequalities, systems, functions as a concept, congruence and basic proofs, and one-variable statistics. Roughly: half of old Algebra 1, a third of Geometry, a dash of stats.

Integrated Math 2

Quadratics — the big one — plus polynomials, similarity, right-triangle trigonometry, and probability. This is the year most students who were “fine” stop being fine, usually because a crack from IM1 finally gets load-bearing.

Integrated Math 3

Exponentials and logarithms, rational and radical functions, circle geometry, and statistical inference. Finish IM3 solidly and Pre-Calculus — then AP Calculus — is open.

Why schools teach it this way

When California adopted the Common Core standards, districts chose between two pathways, and many — including Grossmont Union — chose integrated, the way most countries teach math. The braiding is meant to show connections between topics instead of walling them off year by year.

What to watch for as a parent

  • Mid-year unit switches. The class jumps from algebra to geometry mid-course. A student can go from A to D in three weeks without “getting lazy” — the subject changed under them.
  • Gaps that time-travel. A shaky IM1 topic resurfaces in IM2 and IM3. If this year feels mysteriously hard, the missing piece is often last year’s.
  • The IM3 → Pre-Calc cliff. Students who memorized their way through IM3 hit pre-calc hard. Conceptual understanding now is the insurance policy.

How to actually help

Don’t re-teach your method — it usually collides with the teacher’s and doubles the confusion. Instead, get the gap diagnosed.
