If your student came home with “Integrated Math 1” on their schedule and you thought that’s not the algebra I took — you’re not alone. The Grossmont Union High School District teaches math as Integrated Math 1, 2, and 3, and it’s the single most common source of confusion we hear from East County parents.
We tutor this curriculum every week, for students at Valhalla, Granite Hills, Steele Canyon, Monte Vista, Grossmont, and the rest of the district. In person at our El Cajon center or online over Google Meet.
What Integrated Math actually is
The traditional track taught one subject per year: Algebra 1, then Geometry, then Algebra 2. Integrated Math teaches all three strands every year, building deeper each time:
- Integrated Math 1: linear equations and systems, intro geometry and congruence, basic statistics — roughly the first half of Algebra 1 plus foundations of Geometry
- Integrated Math 2: quadratics, polynomials, similarity, right-triangle trig, and probability
- Integrated Math 3: the rest of Algebra 2 — exponentials, logarithms, rational functions — plus circle geometry and deeper statistics, leading into Pre-Calculus
The math is the same math. What changes is the order — which is exactly why a student can feel lost in IM2 because of one gap from IM1 that never got patched.
Why students struggle with it
Integrated courses switch topics mid-year: a student who was fine during the algebra unit can hit the geometry unit and stall. And because the strands interleave, a crack from last year resurfaces at the worst time. We find that crack first, patch it, then rebuild forward — the same approach as our algebra tutoring, adapted to the integrated sequence.
