English Language Arts Tutoring

Reading and writing are the skills every other subject is built on — a student who reads well tests better across the board. At Shater Learning Center in Rancho San Diego, we help El Cajon and East County students from early readers to college-bound seniors build real comprehension, stronger writing, and the confidence to tackle any text.

We tutor in person at our El Cajon center and online over Google Meet, one-on-one or in small groups.

What we cover

  • Early reading: phonics, decoding, fluency, and comprehension for elementary students
  • Reading comprehension: understanding what you read, inference, and analyzing texts
  • Writing: paragraphs, essays, thesis statements, structure, and revision
  • Grammar & vocabulary: the mechanics that make writing clear and grades go up
  • Literature analysis: for middle and high school English classes
  • English language support: extra help for students building English as a second language

College and high school essays, too

For juniors and seniors, we also help with the writing that carries real weight — personal statements, college application essays, and the analytical writing that shows up on the SAT and in AP English. Strong essays open doors that grades alone don’t.

Students we help — from your school

We work with families across East County, and our tutors know what these classrooms expect:

  • High school: Valhalla, Granite Hills, Steele Canyon, Monte Vista, Grossmont, and Christian High
  • Middle school: Hillsdale, Los Coches Creek, College Preparatory Middle, and Cajon Valley
  • Local private schools: Foothills Christian High School, Christian High School, Our Lady of Grace Elementary, Holy Trinity Elementary, St. Kieran Catholic School, El Cajon Seventh-day Adventist Christian School, The Cambridge School, Village Academy San Diego, Mt. Helix Academy, Christ Lutheran Elementary, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran School, St. Martin of Tours Academy, Excelsior Academy, Heartland Christian School

How it works

1-on-1 in person — Personalized sessions at our El Cajon center focused on your student’s specific reading or writing gaps.

1-on-1 online — The same help over Google Meet, from home.

Small-group in person — A lower-cost option for students working on the same skills.

We start with a quick assessment so we know whether the work is decoding, comprehension, or writing — and we target that.
