Registration: what to know
For Cajon Valley Union School District families, enrollment for the fall typically opens in the spring semester — check cajonvalley.net for this year’s exact dates and your school’s process, since they vary by campus and year. In California, children who turn five by September 1 start kindergarten that fall; children who turn five a bit later may qualify for transitional kindergarten (TK).
What “ready” actually means
Not reading. Not worksheets. Kindergarten teachers consistently care most about a different list:
- Self-management: separating from parents calmly, following two-step directions, handling a routine
- Social skills: taking turns, sharing space, asking for help with words
- Fine motor: holding a crayon or pencil comfortably, using scissors, managing a backpack and lunchbox
- Language: speaking in full sentences, listening to a whole story, retelling part of it
- Early academics — lightly: recognizing some letters (especially their own name), counting small groups of objects, knowing basic shapes and colors
A child doesn’t need all of it on day one. But the more of these are comfortable, the more energy is free for learning instead of coping.
A summer checklist that doesn’t feel like school
- Read aloud daily and ask “what do you think happens next?”
- Count real things — stairs, grapes, cars in the lot
- Practice their name in crayon, chalk, sand — anywhere fun
- Do drop-offs at grandma’s or a friend’s to rehearse the goodbye
- Play board games: turn-taking is a school skill in disguise
