Every September, math teachers spend weeks re-teaching what students knew in June. Researchers have documented the pattern for decades: over a long summer, students lose ground in math faster than in any other subject — often a month or two of it. If your student’s first quizzes are coming back rough, summer slide is the most likely — and most fixable — suspect.
Why math melts faster than reading
Kids keep reading over summer — signs, games, group chats. Almost nobody factors polynomials at the beach. Math skills are procedural and fade without reps, and the fade hits hardest exactly where school resumes: fluency. The student still understands fractions; they’ve just lost the automatic speed the new material assumes.
How to tell slide from a real gap
- Slide: errors are careless and scattered; a week of review and old skills snap back
- Gap: errors cluster on one topic — fractions, negatives, factoring — and review doesn’t fix them, because the concept was never solid
The distinction matters because the fixes differ: slide needs reps, a gap needs re-teaching. Guessing wrong wastes the fall.
The October deadline
Most classes finish review and hit new material within the first month. A student still shaky when that shift happens starts compounding: each new topic built on the wobble.
