What students should know going into 3rd grade
- Adds and subtracts within 100 quickly and accurately
- Reads short chapter books independently with good understanding
- Writes an organized paragraph on a topic
- Understands equal groups — the doorway to multiplication
What 3rd grade covers
Two make-or-break threads run through 3rd grade: multiplication fluency and the shift to reading for information. Both get tested — CAASPP state testing starts this year — and both are assumed forever after.
Math
- Multiplication and division within 100 — the times tables year
- Fractions as numbers: unit fractions, fractions on a number line, simple comparisons
- Area and perimeter; telling time to the minute; graphs
- Two-step word problems that mix operations
Reading and writing
- Reading longer fiction and — increasingly — nonfiction to learn content
- Finding the main idea and citing where the text says so
- Multi-paragraph writing: opinion pieces, reports, narratives
- Cursive, in many California classrooms
Signs your 3rd grader is falling behind
- Times tables won’t stick despite flashcards and tears
- Treats fractions as two unrelated numbers stacked on top of each other
- Reads aloud beautifully but can’t answer “why did the character do that?”
- Suddenly “hates school” — often the first visible symptom of an invisible gap
