First grade is the year school stops being mostly play and starts being mostly reading. It’s a big jump — and the kids who make it smoothly are usually the ones whose kindergarten foundations were solid, not the ones who are simply “smart.”
Here’s what going-in readiness looks like, what the year actually covers in California classrooms, and the early signals that a 1st grader needs backup.
What students should know going into 1st grade
- Knows all letter names and most letter sounds
- Reads and writes their own name; forms most letters legibly
- Counts to 100 by ones and tens; counts objects accurately to 20
- Adds and subtracts small numbers (within 5–10) with fingers or objects
- Can sit with a book or a read-aloud for ten minutes
What 1st grade covers
The headline of 1st grade is learning to read — everything else orbits it.
Math
- Addition and subtraction within 20 — with real fluency within 10
- Place value: tens and ones, numbers to 120
- Comparing numbers, simple word problems
- Time to the hour and half-hour; basic shapes and their attributes
Reading and writing
- Sounding out words — short vowels, digraphs like sh and ch, blends
- Sight words by the dozens, building toward reading simple books independently
- Writing complete sentences with a capital letter and a period
- First tiny “essays”: an opinion, a story, a how-to — a few sentences each
Signs your 1st grader is falling behind
- Guesses words from the picture instead of sounding them out
- Still counts from one every time (can’t “count on” from a number)
- Avoids books, or melts down over a few sentences of writing
- Letter confusion (b/d) persists and grows instead of fading through the year
